Formula 1 needs female drivers - 2nd December 2024
There aren't many women in Formula 1 motorsport. The organisation started F1 Academy in 2023. It's a competition for young women.
These women drivers are 16 to 25 years old. In the competition, everyone has the same special racing car. The drivers can learn a lot with these cars.
F1 Academy trains women for bigger competitions. Then, each F1 team chooses one driver. This woman will race for them.
McLaren chose Ella Lloyd. She has four top-three places in Formula 4. Formula 4 races have men and women drivers.
In the past, people worried about women racing. But there aren't any extra dangers for women racing drivers. Girls and boys can start at the same age.
Boys often start motorsport in small go-karts. Only 13 percent of these drivers are girls. So F1 Academy started Discover your Drive. This project gets more girls to try motorsport. Now, Netflix is making a TV series about F1 Academy.
