Travellers die in Laos - 16th December 2024

Six tourists are dead from bad alcohol. They were in Laos in Southeast Asia. The tourists all stayed at the same hostel. They were from Australia, Britain, Denmark and the USA.

Vang Vieng Valley has lots of hostels. It’s popular with tourists. Hostels often give free drinks to guests.

Police are studying the drinks. The tourists died from drinking methanol. Methanol’s a very dangerous alcohol. It’s a pesticide. It isn’t safe to drink.

Police closed the hostel. They took the hostel workers to the police station. Did they mix methanol into the bottles?

The hostel sold Tiger Vodka or Tiger Whiskey. These are local makes of alcohol. Methanol could be in these drinks. Now, nobody in Laos can sell them.

Two Australian backpackers died. Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles were friends. Now, their families want to help. They’re asking for money. They want to teach people about methanol.
