New hope to stop HIV - 12th August 2024

Doctors are testing a new treatment for HIV. Its name is lenacapavir. This drug stops people from getting the virus.

The disease HIV started in the 1980s. There were no medicines for it. The virus killed millions of people.

Now, there are treatments for HIV. People with HIV can live healthy lives. But they have to take these drugs every day.

This is difficult for people in parts of Africa. The virus is a big problem there. Two thirds of all HIV positive people live in sub-Saharan Africa.

Doctors are giving lenacapavir as an injection. The injection works for 6 months. Doctors gave the injection to young women in Uganda. These women were HIV negative.

The women had a lenacapavir injection every 6 months. They didn’t get HIV. Pregnant women can have the drug too. The drug didn’t damage their babies.

Now, governments need to check these results. Then, doctors can give lenacapavir to more people.
